Initiatives

At Jaypee we adhere to the concept of a better quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come, whilst achieving a stable economic development. With this focus in mind the Jaypee Group made a firm commitment to the epitome of environment protection.

Institutionalizing this Green Initiative
The Jaypee Group has constituted Project Groups at the project, regional and corporate centre level to carry out specific environmental related functions. These groups initiate and sustain measures to mitigate, monitor and control the impact of project implementation on the environment.

The Group’s initial footsteps in the construction industry were as Civil Engineers and EPC contractors. Over the years the group holds the distinction of securing 54% of the private hydropower projects in the country. Being a private player in the hydro power sector, the Group has three operational projects – Baspa II, 300 MW, Vishnuprayag, 400 MW and Karcham Wangtoo a 1000 MW. All the three projects are run – of – the – river projects, that helps conserve the ecological balance without any harm done to the flora or the fauna as these projects are devoid of any rehabilitation or resettlement issues. After the commissioning of the project at the respective project site, we plant tree saplings and nurture them to make the project site all neat and green.

Jaypee's in 1983 set up cement manufacturing facilities and are a leading producer of cement in its natural producing zone. Cement Industry is considered as one of the main polluting industries that harms the eco system. To conserve the mother nature and to stop environmental degradation the cement division boosts of an Environment Management Cell. The cell hosts a fully functional laboratory with modern equipment such as High Volume Samplers, Respirable Dust Samplers, Dust Fall Equipments, Noise Monitoring Equipment, Auto Weather Station, Blast Mate and other supporting equipments for monitoring the impact of cement operations on the environment.

Limestone - a key component in the manufacture of cement, the company mines it using the Computer Aided Deposit Evaluation or CADE with the help of Holder Bank Management Consultancy (HMC), Switzerland. The area for blast is scientifically selected erstwhile keeping environmental issues in mind. All sources of dust generation in the plant are well designed for producing minimum dust.

Resource Conservation
With better awareness of the ecology and our working environment, the Jaypee Group as, indeed, the rest of world – continually looks for innovative and cost - effective solutions to reduce wastes and preserve natural resources.

Some of the measures include :
Reduction in new land acquisition by optimal utilization of existing ones.
Capacity Addition to extant resources including land, machinery, infrastructure and human resource
Reduction in water and fuel consumption by recycling and the endorsing of more efficient combustion methods & state- of - the - art technology.

Afforestation Drive

A continual afforestation drive in Mines, Plants & Township areas and all along road is undertaken to improve overall environment and as a safeguard against pollution. Local plant species have been chosen in accordance with the soil quality, fertility & also in consultation with DFO and the survival rate observed is approx. 85%. From the beginning till year 2011; 6,91,913 saplings in plant and mine areas have been planted. We also do the social forestry in the 28 adopted villages surrounding the cement plant & mines as well as in the area made available by local Administrative Body.

The Group has not limited this plantation drive only to Rewa but has spread this across its all project sites taking the total number of trees planted to over 8 lac. Besides this, ecologically sensitive Mangroves are planted in 50 Hectares of coastal area in Kutch, Gujarat.

Water Conservation

Old mines reservoir four nos. for collection of rain water and stored water is being used for cement manufacturing process and cooling purpose. The present stored water quantity is 21.14 lac m3, this collected rain water is used throughout the year and no ground or surface water is drawn for process purpose. Each rainwater drop is conserved in the plant by an innovative garland canal covering a periphery of 6.2 km. The collected water is diverted into reservoir situated in Mines. Four Rain Water harvesting bodies covering nearly 47.0 hectares have been developed in Mines area. These reservoirs with a capacity of 32.2 lac m3 water have generated a positive impact on the ground water level of adjoining villages by increasing the water table of surrounding wells.

Similarly, at Group’s Sewagram cement plant in Gujarat, the company has developed two ponds for rain water harvesting and the quantity of rain water being collected near the cement plant is 7.5 Lac Cub. Meter.

Air Quality Control

Ambient air quality is monitored on regular basis in core and buffer zone for SPM & RPM.

With installation of a properly designed fuel firing system the Carbon Mono Oxide & Sulpher di-oxide emission is negligible.

Noise Pollution
The noise pollution from turbine, fans centrifugal pumps electric motors etc is kept least with proper design below the permissible limit of 85 dB at 1 mt away from the source.
